I ate it. Hard.

We were walking the short paved trail to the Artist Point lookout in Yellowstone, heading toward the iconic view of the Lower Falls. But I was so focused on the destination that I missed what was right in front of me—namely, a slick patch of black ice.

The view was absolutely worth it—but the bruised elbow is a painful reminder that it’s often best to take things one step at a time.

Don’t get me wrong—getting excited about the future is awesome. Dream big! But if you’re so focused on the finish line that you forget to watch your step...well, you might end up face-first on a national park trail.

Turns out, those small, steady steps? They're kind of important.

If you’re a natural dreamer, you might get stuck when it’s time to actually plan and take action.

On the flip side, if you’re great at making to-do lists, you might lose sight of the finish line—buried in a mountain of tasks that feel productive but don’t actually move you forward.

So, how do you know how to proceed?

Reimagine challenges

Start by getting clear on what matters most—then take one small, intentional step in that direction. Instead of seeing the problem as “I’m stuck” or “I have too much to do,” try asking: What’s really important right now? Shifting how you view the challenge opens up space for insight and creativity.

Discover solutions

Once you’ve identified your next step, pause and check in with your strengths and values. From there, you can start brainstorming solutions that truly fit—ones that are sustainable and aligned, not just quick fixes. What worked for someone else might not work for you, and that’s more than okay. Recall strategies that have worked for you previously and see how they might apply to your current project.

Flow forward

Once you’ve cleared a bit of the mental clutter and found a starting point that feels right—just take one small, intentional step. Then another. That’s how momentum starts to build.

And if you're focused on where you’re going, you're a lot less likely to slip!❤️
